Even though ASL originated in France, each country has its own sign language system. People often believe incorrectly that one sign language system is used throughout the world. Sign language is similar to the spoken language in regards to the diversity of various systems.
American Sign Language is a rich language, with its own grammatical, non-manual, facial and gestural features. ASL is used throughout the United States and Canada. However, often within various regions, there are local signs unfamiliar to those not living in that area.
