ASL is based on concepts, and not English. Many people learning ASL as a second language, desire to sign using English word order, and words. However, ASL is based on the concept of an idea. In a future lesson, I talk about words that we don’t use in ASL, such as “is”, “am”, and “be”. Those are English words. The next time you are signing, think of the concept of what you wish to say, and sign it by “painting” the concept picture in the air.
